The Directress, Sophia Peluso
As a child Sophia dreamed of becoming a dancer. She began training at age eight in ballet, tap, and jazz. At age twelve her jazz dancing provided her opportunity to tour with the United Service Organization. This made her consider what path to take with dance. Deciding that ballet was more intriguing, she began serious study at the Pennsylvania Ballet. Seeing her dedication, her mother, Veronica Mirowsky, encouraged her to enter into private school where she could receive the intense training necessary for professional dance. Thus, she attended all four years of high school at the North Carolina School of the Arts. Shortly before graduation she was accepted into the New Jersey Ballet. From there she moved to the Garden State Ballet and enjoyed teaching special needs children at West Lake School. She began combining her love for the Lord with her love of dance 30 years ago when friend and composer, Sylvia Hollister, asked her to choreograph and dance to her lovely compositions containing scripture for voice and piano. Several pieces later, in 1996, Sophia began to teach as directress of La Petite Ballet at Acorn Montessori School and through Clinton Township Parks & Recreation. She also taught at the Dance Conservatory with the famed Edward Verso and Karen Stasick Verso. In 2003, under the conviction of the Holy Spirit, Sophia began Sophia's Worshipful Ballet & Dance turning from the ties of secular teaching toward a more noble conviction. That would be to ultimately praise and glorify God and to honor those who honor God. Since then many wonderful blessings have come like praying with students and seeing prayers answered. As well as learning the discipline of dance, students are taught the discipline of Christian living through the reading of scripture, devotions and conversation about the Christian faith. Beyond yearly Productions, Sophia has lead her students through dance to minister and encourage at memorial services, nursing homes, 100th birthdays, golden jubilees, Christian women's conferences and as part of the church worship services of different denominations. She teaches Ballet, Pointe, Tap, Lyrical and Theater Dance to students who range in age from 3 to 60 something. She has four children whom she has home schooled, and is a Sunday School teacher at Clinton Church of the Nazarene. She established and maintains a personal ministry, Mercy Speaks.
